TOPIC: “There was an old woman”

NO. OF STUDENTS: 12 males – 8 females
AGE: 10 - 11
ABILITY: Mixed
TIME: 25 minutes
OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson students should
be able to:
Knowledge: Summarize poems in sequence
Skill: Read poems with rhythm
Analyze fact or fiction
Attitude: Read for enjoyment and show
enthusiasm
INSTRUCTIONAL
MATERIAL: Copies of the poem, picture sequence
CONTENT
ANALYSIS: This poem is a wonderful poem to teach students rhythm and rhyme. It will boost the students confidence when they are actively engage with the events in the poem.
The poem also teaches sequence – the
animals also increases in size.
PREVIOUS
KNOWLEDGE: Students know all of the animals so they can use their imagination to bring life to
the poem and analyze whether the poem is
fact or fiction.
INTRODUCTION: Have a student volunteer to be the old lady. She will use the pictures and follow the instructions as the poem is being read.
DEVELOPMENTAL
ACTIVITIES:
Step 1: Teacher will read the first part of
the poem. “There was an old
lady……..perhaps she’ll die.”
Step 2: Students will respond by chanting
together, “she swallowed the …..”
Step 3: Teacher and students read to the
end of the poem.
Have students tell if the poem is
fact or fiction.
“Do you think that the poem is a
fact? (no) Why not?” (the animals will kill her
or they can’t go into her mouth)
CULMINATING
ACTIVITIES: Have students tell how the events
occurred. “What was the first thing she
swallowed?”
APPLICATION: Have students read the poem
again.

fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll die.
There was an old woman who swallowed a
spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside
her,
STUDENTS: She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,

How absurd! to swallow a bird,
STUDENTS: She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
