Previous Knowledge
Students have some dictionary skills.
Students are able to construct sentences.
Introduction
Present the title of the story to students and ask questions to initiate a discussion. Example, “have you ever heard about the Maroons?”
Development
Step1: Present new words on flashcards. Have student use their phonetic skills to decode words. Give clues where necessary to educe words.
Step2: Study each word independently, placing emphasis on beginning letter sound, syllables, silent letters, etc. Present sentence strips (with new words included) and have students read aloud.
Step3: Have students decode meaning of words using context clues. Have students use dictionaries to confirm words meanings. Where multiple meaning is given, elicit and discuss meaning as used in text.
Step4: Elicit sentences from students using words. Record sentences on board and have students read aloud.
Closure
Have class re-read sentence strips, select students to identify the new word in each sentence and underline it.
Application
Make at least one (1) sentence with each word.
