Objectives: At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
Knowledge:
a) Having discussed the islands that make up the Federation of St.Kitts and Nevis, students should be able to name these islands with accuracy
b) With the use of a dictionary or any other means students should be able to define the term Federation.
Skills:
a) Identify the shape of the islands
b) Correctly identify the size of the islands
c) Correctly shape the island of St.Kitts and Nevis

a) Develop a love for the islands in which they live

Teaching Strategies: Inductive Discovery
Instructional Materials: Map of St.Kitts and Nevis, Flashcards with the words Federation, St.Kitts, Nevis, 36 square miles and 68 square miles.
Previous Knowledge:
Students are aware of the shape and size of St.Kitts and Nevis
Social Studies Processes:
Issue centred activity, reinforcing relevant concepts
Introduction Activity:
Teacher will read a poem of St.Kitts and Nevis to students. Have students tell what the poem was about. Expected Response: St.Kitts and Nevis etc. (See appendix for Poem)
Developmental Activities:
Step 1:
Present students with a map of St.Kitts and Nevis. Have students observe and tell the names of the two islands. What is the name of these islands? Expected Response: St.Kitts and Nevis
Step 2:
Elicit from students the special name given to the two islands. What is the special name given to these two islands? Expected Response: Federation. Teacher will then place a flashcard with the word Federation above the two islands on the board.
Step 3:
Discuss with students the shape of both islands. Allowing them to make reference to objects they have encountered previously such as the bat or drumstick for St.Kitts and a ball or hamburger for Nevis.
Step 4:
Lead students to tell the size of the islands. What is the size of St.Kitts/Nevis? Expected Response: St.Kitts is 68 square miles and Nevis is 36 square miles. Teacher will allow students to place the flashcards with the size below the correct island.
Culminating Activity:
Teacher will have students read each flashcard; she will the have students recap the main pints of the lesson by asking individual students to come to the front t label diagrams with the various flashcards
Application: Students will complete the following worksheet by circling the most appropriate answer.
1. Nevis is (36, 68, 63) square miles.
2. The special name given to St.Kitts and Nevis is (Caribbean Sea, Hamburger, and Federation).
3. St.Kitts is (86, 68, 88) square miles.
Draw and label St.Kitts and Nevis.
Appendix:
St.Kitts-Nevis is a lovely land
With hills and trees
And golden sand.
She is peaceful too
And very clean,
The most beautiful land
