Objectives: At the end of the lesson students should be able to;
• Solve simple addition and subtractions sums.
• Recall the basic rules of addition and subtraction.
• Apply the rules correctly to find their answers.
Instructional Materials:
• Menu
• Play money
• Paper
• Pencils
Previous knowledge:
• Students are familiar with additions and subtractions using money.
• Students are familiar with buying things and receiving change.
Introduction:
The teacher will set up the class like a restaurant, and then she will divide the class into groups of five. The teacher will tell the students to pretend that they are at the Marriot having dinner. The teacher will allow the students to seat in their groups.
Procedure:
Step1: Each group will select a leader and the teacher will give each student a piece of paper, a menu and a pencil.
Step2: The teacher will assign a budget to each group.
Group1- $50
Group2- $60
Group3- $40
Group4- $70
Group5- $30
Step3: teacher will inform students that they’re to order any item from the menu, but they are to stay within their budget.
Step4: the teacher will then inform the students that after everyone has selected their item from the menu, they are to add up all the items that they selected and write the answer on their paper.
Step5: After they will subtract the answer that they got from their budget.
Step6: The students will compare their answers and the leader should make sure that they arrive at the correct answer and not go over their budget.
Closure: At the end of the exercise the teacher will check each group work to make sure that they have the correct working and that they stayed within their budget. If any group got their working wrong or if they went over their budget they are suppose to do the exercise again.
Application: Solve these word problems
1. Jemel went to Laws with $10. He bought a book for $3.50, a ruler for 75c and a pencil for 50c. How much money did Jemel spent at the store?
2. How much change did Jemel received from the $10?
