Teaching Materials:
Video, pencil,, flashcard, chart with transportation used long ago, chart with transportation used long ago, chart with poem.
Teaching Learning Strategy:

Social studies Processes
„« Providing for social participation and cooperation in classroom discussion and activities
„« Reinforcing relevant concepts
„« Emphasizing meaningful students¡¦ activities
Introduction
Students will watch a video which illustrates how people and goods are transported from one place to the next. Children will pay close attention to the different means of transportation.
Teacher engages students in a discussion by asking them what they liked about the video.
Expected Response(s):
„« It was interesting.
„« It shows how people and goods from one lace the next
Teacher asks students, ¡§What are the things mentioned that can take people or goods from one place to the next.
Expected Response (s): foot, bicycle, vehicle, ship, boat
Development:
Step 1
Two students will then do a role play. One will be sleeping, the second standing and the other sitting in a chair. Teacher will ask students if the role play showed moving from one place to another. Expected Response: ¡§No¡¨.
Teacher elicits reason (s) for students¡¦ response.
Expected Response:
„« ¡§Because they are not moving.¡¨
„« ¡§They should move from one place to get to another.¡¨
Step 2
Teacher presents a flashcard with the word ¡¥transportation¡¦ on the chalkboard, then ask students which one of the previous scenarios (video or role play) showed that transportation has taken place.
Teacher elicits reason(s) for response. Students will recognize that the video showed and talked about people and goods moving from one place to another.
Teacher then asks, ¡§What is transportation?¡¨
Expected Response(s): Transportation is the movement of people and goods from one place to another.
Step 3
Teacher will place a teaching aid with transportations present on the blackboard and ask what they think was used long ago.
Expected Response: car, bus, bicycle, boat
Teacher will write responses on blackboard. Teacher will then place another teaching aid on the blackboard with transportations used long ago to compare students¡¦ answers. Students will then be asked to compare the two charts for similarities and differences.
Expected Response(s): fishing boat, foot (similarities) and cruise ship, animal carts (differences)
Teacher builds from students¡¦ responses by probing further. For example, why do you think that animal carts are no longer/hardly used (takes longer than other means of transportation) and why do you think people are now using cruise ship rather than planes (more comfortable and more enjoyable). Teacher will have students recognize that as time goes by, people will use transportations that are more effective and suitable to them.
Consolidation
Have students recite a poem entitled ¡¥transportation¡¦. Students will read the whole poem then teacher will read the first line while the children read the second. Transportation
How do you go to school each day?
By bus, by car or another way.
How do you visit your cousin faraway?
Hop on a jet plane and fly there today
How do ripe oranges get to Maine?
Packed up in boxes and sent on a train.
How does Jack the fisherman go out to fish?
In his little fisherman boat that he calls Trish.
How do car parts ride to Mi-chi-gan?
They travel in trucks or a special van.
How do the stores get the toys you buy?
Some toys sail on ships across ocean so wide.
People and things move about it¡¦s true
Without transportation, what would we do?
Application
In groups of five (5), students will compose a poster indicating one classification (whether land, air, sea). One member of each group will present their posters while the others agree whether or not they have the right means of transportation under the correct heading.
