Objectives: At the end of the session students should be able to:
• Describe a set
• Identify elements that belong to a particular set
Materials:
Skittles, chalk, chalkboard, pencils
Prior Knowledge:
Students are to sort, match and classify objects and numbers in a set
Introduction:
Teacher engages students in a game. Teacher presents students with skittles. Teacher instructs students to group skittles according to (i) their different colors, (ii) groups of 6, 3, and 7.
Procedures
Step 1.
Teacher asks students what is a set? Teacher then leads students into discussion about what had just taken place with the skittles in order to describe a set. An expected response, a set is group of things or numbers usually of the same kind.
Step 2.
Teacher draws on the board different sets, example a set of even numbers elements are asked to elicit the different elements to be placed in the sets. Expected response {2, 4, 6, 8…}
Step 3.
Teacher draws various kinds of sets on the board and have students elicited what elements do not belong.
Closure:
Teacher writes definition of a set on the board and have students elicit what a set is and give (3) three example of a set.
Application:
A) Complete the sentence.
A ________is a group of ________usually of the kind.
B) Given a list of elements, place the different elements in the correct set
{Dogs, 9, 14, 17, 3, cats, birds, 6, 10, rabbits, 22, 29, 27, 11, 24, 26, 8}
