Objectives:
- After viewing a video about land pollution and the improper disposal of garbage, students should be able to write five sentences to explain how improper disposal of garbage can affect the environment.
- At the end of the discussion on the reduction and prevention of improper disposal of garbage, students should be able to state four ways in which one can reduce or prevent improper disposal of garbage.
- After discussing showing pride in our environment, students should be able to write one way in which they can demonstrate pride in their environment.
- Children, after discussing reduction and prevention measures, should be able to collectively create a list of five rules and consequences, in order to help them and other students to remember how to dispose of their garbage.
- By the end of the lesson, students should be motivated to demonstrate pride in their environment by practicing proper disposal of their garbage.

What is land pollution? Land pollution is the state in which the land is made untidy because of the improper disposal of garbage and other items. Some of the ways in which the environment is polluted are: through persons throwing their garbage anywhere they want to, factory produced litter that is disposed of in an improper manner. How can we help to improve the condition of the environment? We can put up posters reminding persons of how to dispose of their litter, place advertisements on the radios and televisions to inform persons of ill effects and to give alternative measures. Pride is showing a level of respect for the importance and value of something.
Previous Knowledge: Children should know what pollution is. They should also know some measures that can be taken to reduce pollution. They should also know some of the ways in which they can show pride in their school and surroundings.
Instructional Materials: A video depicting different ways in which the land, water and air become polluted. The video will also show how pollution can be prevented or reduced. Pictures showing how the environment is affected, a chart showing different areas of the federation where there is pollution.
Teaching Strategy: Inductive Discovery, Discussion

Introduction: Children will be shown a video about the issue of pollution. The video will also show ways in which pollution can be reduced. The video will be discussed. Questions like; what was viewed in the video? What were the ways in which the land was polluted? Expected responses; Children may explain that they viewed land pollution. They may also say that persons spitefully threw their garbage on the ground or the cans were knocked down. Elicit from the students what the topic of the day would be. The objectives would then be mentioned.
Development:
Step 1: Children and teacher will discuss pollution as it relates to the federation. What are some of the ways in which pollution occurs in the federation? Are the ways similar to those seen in the video? If so, how? Discussion will continue with the children naming areas in the federation that they have seen polluted. They may speak about their neighbourhoods or their school environment. Expected responses; pollution occurs when animals knock over garbage cans, when people throw garbage on the ground. Some of the ways are similar like persons throwing garbage on the ground. Children will then be shown the chart showing different polluted areas of the federation.
Step 2: Students will be encouraged to think about ways in which land pollution affects the environment. Chemicals may kill plants and animals, messy environment may cause illnesses through the increase of disease carrying bacteria and animals. Children and teacher may also discuss some of these diseases caused by improper disposal of garbage. Children will then be shown some pictures that display how the improper disposal of garbage can affect the environment.
Step 3: Children will then share ways in which pollution can be reduced and their opinions as to why pollution should be reduced. Children and teacher will also discuss pride in oneself and country as a means of preventing or reducing pollution. Children may be asked: how can pride be a preventative or reductive measure? Children may say if the persons have pride in where they live they would keep it clean. Connections may be made to the children’s possessions. Children can be asked how they show pride in their school attire for example. They may reply that they keep themselves clean and tidy. Elicit from the students how this may be connected to pollution and pride in one’s country.
Consolidation: Children will be taught a poem entitled “Keep the earth CLEAN”. They will each be given a copy of the poem to stick into their note books.
Application: Students will be given a word puzzle on pollution in order to complete.
