Objectives: Students should be able to:
- Give examples of antonyms
- Identify antonyms that form their opposite by using un.
- Complete sentences by writing the correct antonym for words in brackets.
Materials: Flash Cards, Chart, Laptop, projector, white board.
Previous Knowledge: Students know what the regular antonyms are and how to use them.
Introduction:
Have students listen to a song about antonyms from the laptop. From the song have students state what antonyms are. Have students identify pair of antonyms in the song. Peer evaluation.
Development:
Step 1:
Using the projector present students with pairs of pictures. Elicit from students what is shown in the pictures. Have individual students record the responses on the white board.
Step 2:
Have students tell what they notice. Direct students attention to the words that end in the prefix ‘un’. Elicit from students what they think the word ‘un’ means. Explain to students that prefixes are. (A prefix is a group of letters that comes before a word to change its meaning.)
Step 3:
Present flash cards to students in a bag. Have individual students pick a word from the bag and go toe the front of the class and read their word. Questions students to find out if this word can be used with ‘un’ to form its opposite. Have the child stick the word on the chalk board next to the ‘un’ if it is so. Have students read words form the chalk board.
Step 4:
Place students in groups. Have them work together and use the computer to search for three words that form their opposite by using ‘un’. Have a child from each group present their words. Peer evaluation.
Closure:
Recap on the main points of the lesson by having student read a poem and pick out the words that beginning with ‘un’. Have them give the antonym for the words.
Application:
Have students complete each sentence by writing the opposite for the word in the bracket.
