Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Identify and name places in their community
Use cardinal directions to locate places in their community
Recognize the importance of these places in their community
Name their community and identify their community on a map.
Materials:
• Map of community
• Computers
• Drawings to represent places
Previous knowledge: Students know what a community is.
Introduction:
Teacher will have students give the name of their community through a riddle.
Have students state what a community is.
Development
Step 1: Mount a picture of the community for students on the wall. Elicit from students some places that are in their community. Record the students’ responses on the chalk board.
Step 2: Teacher and students will talk about the places that the students mentioned in their community. Have students locate these places on the map.
Step 3: After locating places, teacher and students will discuss the importance of these places in the community.
Step 4: Place students in groups and distribute the drawings of places. Have students using cardinal direction, locate the place they have and place them on the map one at a time.
Closure: Recap the lesson through oral questioning.
Application: Teacher will require each student to sit behind a computer where they would be given a map of their community along with drawings and a key. Students will have to use cardinal directions to complete their maps. After students are finished they will print their completed map.
