Poem: There’s A Polar Bear
Grade: 1

Objectives: At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
(1) Tell where Polar Bears are normally found.
(2) Read the poem with rhythm and rhyme.
(3) Give rhyming words.
(4) Write sentences based on a Polar Bear.
Introduction:
Teacher presents a large picture of a Polar Bear. Have students observe the picture and describe it. Teacher then leads students in discussion about the Bear. Questions will follow such as, where is the Polar Bear usually found and what it likes to do? Expected response: It is a large white bear living in the Arctic regions/cold regions. Teacher emphasizes that these Bears thrive better in cold regions.
Presentation:
Step 1: Teacher presents poem on chart to the class. Teacher reads the title of the poem, “There’s A Polar Bear.” Have students tell what they think the poem will be about.
Step 2: Teacher reads the poem fluently with rhythm and rhyme for students to listen. Have students tell what was mentioned in the poem.
Step 3: Have students then read the poem fluently with rhythm and rhyme. They will tap on the desks and come up with catchy tunes. Have students then give the rhyming words from the poem such as (hairy/buttery) (nibbling/munching) (roar/door) (seat/meat). Teacher records them on the chalkboard. Elicit other rhyming words from students that they might know
Conclusion
Have students repeat poem with rhythm and rhyme with musical
attachment.
Application:
Have students assemble a puzzle of a Polar Bear and write two sentences about the Polar Bear.
