Objectives:
• Knowledge: Identify 4 reasons why persons seek employment after engaging in classroom discussion.
• List at least 10 types of jobs members in society are engaged in from examples given.
• Skill: Group reasons for seeking employment under appropriate headings from list provided from class discussion.
• Attitude: Develop an understanding that reasons for seeking employment will vary based on the person.
Concepts
• Higher Order: Employment, comfort, independence, retirement, standard of living, social mobility, self- esteem, self- respect, country, economy, skills.
• Lower Order: food, clothing, shelter, family members, bills, money.

• Higher Order: People seek work for a number of different reasons

Lesson Content: providing for self and family, achieving better status, seeking independence, helping others, learning new skills, developing the country, using existing skills and qualifications, provision for retirement, types of jobs available.
Previous Knowledge:
• Students are aware of reasons why family members work and/or seek employment.
Instructional Materials: Pictures, song, newspaper article, charts, radio, sentence strips and activity sheets.
Teaching Strategy: deduction and questioning
Social Studies Processes: Inferring, critical thinking, student participation.
Introduction: Allow students listen to the song “everybody must work.” Elicit from students the main purpose of the song. (Expected response: people should work, work is important, how people should work). Note students’ responses. Provide feedback and reinforcement.
Developmental:
Step one 1: A stimulus will be presented to the students using a projector. After brief discussion of the stimulus, elicit from the students reasons why they would seek employment. (Expected response:
providing for self and family,
achieving better status,
seeking independence,
helping others,
learning new skills,
Using existing skills and qualifications.
Note student responses. Provide feedback and reinforcement.
Step 2: Use power point presentation with pictures representing different types of jobs. Have the students examine pictures and select one job that any member in their community is engaged in. question students as to why they chose that job. Allow students to use step one as reference point for their answer. Note student responses. Provide feedback and reinforcement.
Step 3: Provide students with sentence strip on which is written reasons why people seek employment. Allow students to dramatize the reason for employment that is written on the sentence strip. Through teacher’s guidance, Have the students guess what reason is being dramatize. Provide feedback and reinforcement.
Consolidation: Allow students to play a story telling game. The teacher would start by saying “I seek employment because…” The students’ responses will be the body of the story. Each child is required to repeat the opening statement and all other students’ responses preceding theirs.
Application: Provide students with activity sheet entitled “reasons why I would work” students are to complete the table on the activity sheet by grouping the list of reasons for work under two main headings. (Personal or family) Provide feedback and reinforcement.
