Introduction
Allow pupils to lead a discussion about the part of the story previously read as a form of revision of story content. With use of the flash cards, review all the words previously taught. Review words individually and in unison.
Developmental Activities
Step 1
Teacher will discuss with pupils that the purposes of the lesson are for them to read orally, evaluate themselves based on the guidelines outlined by the checklist, evaluate others’ reading and the reading from the news reporter. Teacher will allow pupils to read the contents of the oral reading checklist. Remind students that the purpose of the checklist is to act as a guide for oral reading and that all readers must be evaluated based on it.
Step2
Introduce the reporter and the camera men to the children. Explain to students that normally the teacher or a volunteer from the class will do the model reading but today will we allow Ms. Herbert, a ZIZ news reporter to do the model reading. Have her sit on the Author’s chair and be crowned in order to read. Remind pupils to pay close attention to the contents of the checklist as Ms. Herbert reads orally. Allow students to make simple notes about the model reading based on the checklist. After Ms. Herbert has read allow her to evaluate herself then allow the students to evaluate her.
Step 3
Explain to pupils that we are all reporters and it is our duty to report to the citizens what has happened on the farmyard. Allow pupils to volunteer to read the same passage while being video taped. After the student has read the passage, allow him/her to evaluate him/her self then allow the other students to evaluate. Allow several students to read and focus on what constitutes good oral reading. Constantly discuss the items on the oral reading checklist with students.
Step 4
The camera men will allow pupils to view the recording and suggest ways of improving their oral reading skills based on the mistakes or guidelines that were not followed. Ensure to remind pupils of the importance of oral reading.
Closure
Elicit from pupils what constitutes good oral reading.
Application
Pair Reading
