Lesson Content:
This lesson focuses on expanding students’ knowledge base in the tourism industry, with specific emphasis on “reasons for tourists’ visits, and local attractions.
Previous Knowledge:
Students are familiar with the concept of ‘tourist industry’ and ‘local attractions’. There are able to identify certain local attractions, activities ands services associated with the tourism industry.
Teaching Materials:
• Brochures of various tourist attractions on St. Kitts and Nevis
• Chart depicting the Frigate Bay area
• Magazines illustrating various tourist attractions within the federation
• Poster with various tourist attractions on Nevis
• Markers, manila, glue, poster boards
• Video of tourists local tourist attractions, computer, speakers

Introduction:
Distribute brochures/pictures of tourist attractions in St. Kitts and Nevis. Elicit from the students the name of the industry to which they are related.
Expected response: “The tourism Industry”
Have students give reasons for identifying the tourism industry as the primary focus.
Expected Response(s): “I see foreigners.” “I see tourists.” I see beaches” “Those places are where tourists visit.”

Step 1
Guide students through formulating simple definitions for “tourist” and the “tourism industry”. Have students give reasons for tourists’ purpose for visiting the federation.
Expected Response(s): “Tourists are people who visit our island for fun”. “Tourists are white people”. “Tourists are people who come from around the world to see our island.” “Tourists are foreigners.” “Tourism is a business where people come to our island to see it.” “Tourism involves providing services to tourists.”
Teacher clarifies and presents acceptable definitions if necessary.
Step 2
Stimulate discussion by presenting a 5 minutes video depicting various tourist attractions and activities within St. Kitts. Encourage students to pay attention, the identify attractions depicting by stating their names and where there are located. Ask students if they have ever gone to any of these places; who are the people who usually visit these places? Why do they visit these places? What are some activities you noticed in the video?
Expected Response(s): “I saw Frigate Bay, Beaches, Brimstone Hill, etc.” “I went to Brimstone Hill.” “People visit these places to take pictures; they want to know more about the place; to have fun, etc” I saw someone diving, swimming, dancing, riding, etc.”
Step 3
Elicit from students the names of various tourist attractions on Nevis. Have students discuss similarities and differences between the tourist industry of St. Kitts and that of Nevis.
Present students with posters depicting various tourist attractions, activities and services on Nevis. Ask students if they recognize or had ever gone to any of these places.
Guide students through classifying the various forms of tourism within the federation under these categories: Heritage (historical), Sports, and Eco- tourism.
Closure:
Recap lesson by presenting having students orally recall why tourists come to the Federation. Guide students through formulating a generalization by presenting a cloze procedure activity as a stimulus and have students provide responses to fill in the blank spaces. For example:
“People come from around the _________ to St. Kitts and Nevis for pleasure. These persons are called ______. For example, some visit St. Kitts and Nevis to explore our _________ tourism; while some comes to enjoy and explore our _________, _________ and ________tourism.”
Application:
Students will work in groups to create mini posters by categorizing pictures of local tourists’ attractions under these headings: Sports Tourism, Eco- Tourism, and Heritage Tourism.
