Topic: Conflict Resolution

Objectives:
At the end of session, students should be able to:
Knowledge : 1. Explain how conflicts arise.
Skills: 1. Dramatize a conflict scenario then outline steps
steps in which to resolve it.
Attitude: 1. Demonstrate confidence in using more
constructive ways to deal with conflict.
Higher-Order Concepts: Conflict, Compromise, Peace, violence
Lower-Order Concepts: dispute
Higher-Order Generalizations:
1. Because individuals differ in so many ways, conflict is a part of everyday life; however, it does not have to lead to violence.
2. Although conflicts usually arise out of a number of elements, they are always influenced by cause and effect.
Teaching strategy:
Problem – solving and inquiry
Teaching Materials:
Video player, flash cards depicting the concepts: conflict, compromise, peace
Previous Knowledge:
Students have seen and been witnesses of conflicts and they themselves have been in conflicts.
Introduction:
Show a video entitled “ Resolving Conflicts” which presents a skit involving two students who settled a conflict peacefully.
Developmental Activity:
Step 1
Elicit what it means to have a “conflict?”
Question students about a variety of conflicts that commonly occur at school. Elicit from students what they think was responsible for the way it turned out.
Step2
Have students relate their experiences when they were caught in the middle when other persons could not agree or a time when they were in a conflict that wasn’t resolved. Have them examine how they felt and what they said or did.
Have students work in groups to formulate some steps or rules for resolving conflict.
Step 3
Have four volunteers take defined roles and role play a conflict scenario culminating with a peaceful solution.
Step 4
Lead students into a discussion on how to settle disputes peacefully.
Consolidation:
Have students work in groups to make posters with slogans depicting conflict resolution.
Application:
Students outline steps to resolve conflicts peacefully.
