Objectives: Students should be able to:
• Name the letter ‘C’
• Produce the sound of the letter ‘C’
• Identify pictures with the letter ‘C’
Prior knowledge: Children are able to:
• Say the letters of the alphabet
• Identify the letters A, B, I, N, S, P and S
• Produce the sound for the identified letters above.
INTRODUCTION The teacher taps into the students’ prior knowledge by putting the letters B and S on the chalkboard and ask the class to make the sounds of those two letters. The teacher then asks the students to name two things that begin with the letters B and S. The letter C is then written on the chalkboard and the students are asked to identify the letter.
Teacher sets up a video and tells the children that we are going to learn the letter C. Children will engage in the actions of the video.
PROCEDURE
STEP ONE
Teacher takes a cat (kitten) out of a shoe box and introduced her to the class as Candy. The children are asked to identify the animal and discuss the letter that her name begins with. Candy is then removed from the classroom. The teacher then displays a large picture of a cow on the chalkboard and the students are asked to identify the animal. The children whose names begin with the letter C were asked to stand and call their name.
STEP TWO
Teacher writes the words cat, cow and Candy on the chalkboard. Teacher calls the words and allows the students to repeat the words. Allow the children to put emphasis on the initial letter sound of each word. The teacher then leads the students into the singing of the song, ‘The C in cat say ______.
‘The C in cow says _____ and the C in Candy says _____. (The children say/ make the sound).
STEP THREE
Display some picture/word cards and allow the students to identify the picture on each one. The teacher engages the class into the singing of the song, ’If you see and you know it make the sound ‘. Individual students are asked to come to the display-board and identify the C in each picture/word and make the sound associated with the letter.
CLOSURE
Teacher writes the words Collin, Candy, car, cat, cup, cow, come and comb on chalkboard. Allow the students to call the words repeatedly to emphasize the C sound in each word. Teacher shows a task sheet to the class and discusses it. Teacher allows the students to contribute to the discussion with anything they wish to share.
APPLICATION
Provide the students with task sheets and instruct them to circle the pictures which show something that begins with the letter/sound ‘C’.
